About Marint centrum
The Baltic Sea’s environment is a matter close to many hearts, but it is a lifeline for Simrishamn Municipality. The sea is central to the municipality’s identity, attractiveness, business sector, and employment. A healthy sea is essential for a thriving Österlen.

Marint centrum (Marine Center)
Marint centrum was established in 2010 as a meeting place for issues related to the sea, water, and coastal communities. Its overarching goal is to protect the Baltic Sea environment and promote sustainable development in the Hanö Bay region. The center operates with the belief that the sea is a valuable resource and that cross-fertilization between different competencies and stakeholders leads to greater outcomes.
We act as a catalyst to create and disseminate knowledge, initiate measures for a better environment, support the development of new ideas and innovations, and promote sustainable business development related to the sea and water. We also facilitate collaborations between the public sector, industry, and academia.
Marint centrum is part of Simrishamn municipality. Our work contributes to fulfilling the municipality’s strategic sustainability commitments, such as reducing environmental impact on the Baltic Sea, minimizing all types of marine pollution, helping restore fish stocks to sustainable levels, advocating for the responsible use of marine resources, developing vibrant harbors, stimulating research and knowledge-building, and fostering innovation and sustainable growth in the marine industries.
Read about Framtidens fiskehamn Öppnas i nytt fönster. - a model for how sustainable local fishing and processing can ensure food supply, drive innovation, create jobs, and strengthen preparedness without depleting the Baltic Sea’s resources.
A key driving force for us at Marint centrum is spreading knowledge about the sea, water, and coastal environments to children and young people. We collaborate with Nova highschool and the Österlen Nature School to spark early interest and encourage care for marine life.
Since 2020, Lund University and Simrishamn municipality have been running a research and innovation environment for Hanö Bay and the southern Baltic Sea at Marint centrum. The research conducted here is needs-based and carried out in collaboration with municipalities, companies, and other actors in the Hanö Bay region. Marint centrum also hosts a field laboratory equipped for sampling and data collection in Hanö Bay.
At Marint centrum, you will find Lund University, the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management, and several companies. You will also meet the New Business Center and the Innovation Center for Rural Areas. The municipality's port office, business development unit, and tourist center are also located here, along with Nova High School’s natural science program.
